“Jaunpur se Bollywood tak! ”
He is the erstwhile ‘star’ of every Ram Lila, every drama, and every nautanki in Jaunpur. So sure is he of his histrionics, that he has come all the way to ‘the city of dreams’ - Mumbai, to be a ‘Phillum Star’!
He is Lallan, a simpleton from Jaunpur, a small town near Banaras, UP. Though not a smart alec, Lallan is full of rustic intelligence and earthy wisdom! The quintessential movie buff from India’s Hindi heartland, Lallan aims to be UP’s biggest export to Bollywood after Amitabh Bacchhan!
Come Friday and you will inevitably find him at the only movie theatre in Jaunpur, taking in the week’s latest releases — ‘first day, first show’. He is an avid film buff to whom anything connected to films is sacred — he even has the ticket stub of each and every Bollywood movie he has ever seen!
Lallan’s Favorites
His all time favourite star: ‘Mithunda’, -- Mithun Chakravarthy. His favourite film: ‘Disco Dancer’! His signature accent: pure Bhojpuriya! His trademark – Curiosity! Even the iciest of Bollywood maidens and the haughtiest actors, are subjected to his incessant questions. His hobby: Singing! An expert bathroom singer, he replaces original lyrics with his own words, which more often than not result in a hilarious parody of the original song.
His closest friend: Ganeshi Bhaiya! Whenever in doubt, he calls Ganeshi Bhaiya, his next-door neighbour in Jaunpur. A typical small-town Mister Know-it-all, Ganeshi Bhaiya happens to be an expert on cricket, amongst other things!
His confidante: Chadar Khan! Lallan respects the wisdom of Chadar Khan, his landlord — a witty old man, with a roving eye to boot!
His only secret: He gets very uncomfortable around women in the archetypical short and sexy Bollywood outfits!
